Description:
PhD (BURSAL) & POSTDOC POSITIONS PhD project 1 - Determinants of role function in depression and social anxiety. A NESDA study of the heterogeneity in role impairment Interdisciplinary Centre for Psychiatric Epidemiology (ICPE) Department of Psychiatry University Medical Center Groningen Supervisors: Profs J. (Hans) Ormel, Willem N. Nolen & Brenda Penninx It is well documented that considerable heterogeneity exists in role functioning of patients with the same psychiatric diagnosis. Some patients with major depression do surprisingly well, whereas others do very poorly. The proposed study seeks to identify the causes of this heterogeneity, using data from the Netherland Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). NESDA is optimally suited to address these research questions as it has excellent measures of severity of depression, role functioning, potentially confounding comorbidity, and a broad range of person and environmental characteristics which may account for the heterogeneity. NESDA is longitudinal and recruited more that 2000 patients. PhD project 2 - Neural basis of cognitive-emotional processing in neuroticism: a neuroimaging study in twins BCN NeuroImaging Center & Interdisciplinary Centre of Psychiatric Epidemiology (ICPE) , Department of Psychiatry University Medical Center Groningen Supervisors: Profs André Aleman, J (Hans) Ormel & Harriette Riese This PhD project will investigate the neural basis of cognitive-emotional mechanisms underlying neuroticism. Neuroticisme is one of the super-ordinate factors of human personality and seems to reflect the readiness of withdrawal behavior in potentially unrewarding or uncertain situations and its associated reactivity (fear, anxiety, sadness). Neuroticism is a very strong and reliable predictor of psychopathology. The neural basis of neuroticism is still unclear. The proposed project focuses on cognitive-emotional mechanisms that may underlie the association between neuroticism and psychopathology. Functional and effective connectivity will be investigated between amygdala, anterior cingulate and dorsolatral prefrontal cortex when exposed to a frustrating task and various forms of social threat. The neuroimaging will be done in twins to also examine genetic and environment origins of CNS correlates of neuroticim. TENURE TRACK POSTDOC POSITION PROJECT: LIFE EVENTS, ADAPTIVE CAPACITY, AND MENTAL HEALTH Interdisciplinary Centre of Psychiatric Epidemiology (ICPE) Department of Psychiatry University Medical Center Groningen This position will be in the ICPE (www.icpe.nl) and the TRAILS study group (www.trails.nl). Main task will be to analyze and publish TRAILS data, with a focus on interplay of life events (including prenatal, childhood, and adolescent adversity), adaptive capacity (in terms of temperament, cognition, stress-reactivity, etc.), and mental health. The candidate doc will also supervise PhD students, participate in grant proposal development, contribute to central TRAILS activities, and have minor teaching responsibilities.
